Currently, scammers are exploiting high-tech applications to spoof phone numbers (Caller ID Spoofing) to misappropriate personal information and assets. To help you proactively protect yourself against financial risks, Techcombank would like to issue a warning regarding the latest tactics used by scammers:

 

1. Scam Tactics

Step 1: Spoofing the Caller ID

Scammers use software to alter the displayed phone number so it appears to be from authorities such as the Police, the procuracy, Courts, bank call centers, or even a relative’s number saved in the victim’s contacts. They may also use AI to mimic regional accents to increase credibility

Step 2: Luring via Scripts: 

After gaining the victim's trust, scammers ask victims to transfer money or provide sensitive information, such as passwords, OTP codes, card numbers, etc., under the pretext of resolving an issue.

Step 3: Appropriation

Once they obtain the information or the transferred funds, the scammers quickly move the money and cut off all contact..

2. Recommendations from Techcombank

 

To ensure your safety, Techcombank recommends that you follow the "3 DON'Ts - 3 DOs" principle:

 

❌ 3 DON'Ts:

  • DO NOT provide personal information, card numbers, CVV codes, passwords, or OTP codes to anyone over the phone, including those claiming to be bank employees or law enforcement officers.
  • DO NOT transfer money to unknown accounts based on any request made solely via a phone call.
  • DO NOT click on unknown links sent via messages or during a call.

 

✅ 3 DOs:

  • DO proactively hang up and contact the relevant authorities directly, call the bank's official hotline, or call your friends/relatives using the numbers saved in your contact list to verify if a call shows signs of being suspicious.
  • DO regularly share this warning with your loved ones (especially the elderly and students) to raise collective vigilance.
  • DO save evidence (phone numbers, call recordings) to provide to the authorities if necessary.
